Computational Biology Group Postdoctoral fellowship in Bioinformatics Specializing in Microbiome NGS Analysis

The Computational Biology group at UCT is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in Microbial Bioinformatics to conduct research on microbiome and related projects. The successful candidate will have experience in Bioinformatics, with a research interest in infectious diseases. He/she will join the Computational Biology Group (www.cbio.uct.ac.za), which forms the centre of bioinformatics activities at the university.

Academic Conditions of Award:

The successful candidate must be in possession of a Ph.D or equivalent degree in a relevant area (Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, Biostatistics or Computational Biology), and some exposure to bioinformatics/computational biology. Experience with NGS and/or metagenomics data is required.

The research to be undertaken will include:

  • bioinformatics analysis of Next Generation Sequencing data;
  • evaluation of existing pipelines and developing custom data analysis and reporting pipelines that best suit the research projects;
  • provision of guidance on NGS sequencing strategies and data analysis and interpretation to other project members, and
  • a requirement that the incumbent remain up-to-date with new developments in Bioinformatics and microbiome research.

General Conditions of Award:

  1. Only individuals who have achieved the doctoral degree within the past 5 years are eligible to apply
  2. Applicants may not previously (since their PhD) have held full-time professional or academic positions
  3. The successful candidate may, as part of their professional development, be required to participate in departmental activities such as limited teaching and supervision and duties incidental there to
  4. The successful incumbent will be required to comply with the University’s approved policies, procedures and practises for the postdoctoral sector.

Value and tenure:

The value of the fellowship is ZAR 200 000 per annum. No benefits or travel allowances are included in the value of the fellowship. The fellowship is tenable for 1 year with the possibility for renewal for a second year, dependent on performance.
