Data Systems Manager (Bioinformatics)

The Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa: http://www.h3africa.org/) initiative aims to facilitate a contemporary research approach to the study of genomics and environmental determinants of common diseases with the goal of improving the health of African populations. The National institutes of Health (NIH) and Wellcome Trust have funded several projects under the banner of H3Africa, including research projects, collaborative centres, biorepositories and a bioinformatics network, H3ABioNet. H3ABioNet, coordinated from the University of Cape Town, is tasked with storage and management of H3Africa data. Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a 12 month, fixed term contract position of a Data Systems Manager (Bioinformatics), for appointment as soon as possible.

The purpose of this position is to set up and manage the H3Africa Data Archive, which will be used to stage datasets submitted by H3Africa consortium projects before they are submitted to the European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA). The main responsibility will be ensuring that the data archive meets the service level agreement and user requirements as set out by the H3ABioNet Data Management Task Force and the H3Africa Data Sharing Working Group. This will include system design; maintaining security of the system; supporting users with data submission; ensuring timely EGA submission and facilitating data transfer. The person is also required to work on data warehouse solutions for querying and mining of selected data from the archive. The position will be situated in the Computational Biology Group, which is in the Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences and the Institute of Infectious Disease & Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town. 


  • Minimum BSc (Hons) degree in Computer Science or related subject,a Masters degree is preferable
  • 3 related/considerable years of experience in software development or IT
  • Experience in data warehousing, databases, open source software, systems administration, software/systems security, XML transformations
  • Experience with integration into existing APIs
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics, genomics or genetics would be advantageous


  • Design a secure data archive and storage solution
  • Maintain access control systems, backups, access logs and software updates of the system hosting the archive
  • Liaise with H3A projects and assist them in submitting compliant data. Provide training workshop / documentation for data submitters
  • Ensure data is in EGA-compliant format before submission to EGA. Ensure submission to EGA archives is within required timeframe
  • Develop tools & infrastructure for mining of datasets (e.g. data warehouses)

The annual cost of employment, including benefits for this 12 month, fixed term contract is between R213,748 and R406,792.
