About the job

The Department of Science and technology has invested in a National Bioinformatics Service Platform (BSP) with the aim of providing a range of user-centred and well- coordinated computational bioinformatics services to the South African biotechnology industry and life science researchers. The BSP support shall encompass access to bioinformatics expertise, computational infrastructure, human capital development activities and research partnership opportunities. The BSP will be managed within the Centre for High Performance Computing of the Meraka Institute of CSIR - a leading scientific and technology research organisation, implementing projects throughout Africa and making a difference in people’s lives.

The BSP will collaborate closely with the DST’s National Cyberinfrastructure Initiative and establish formal partnerships with noteworthy institutions. Under the guidance of the Steering Committee and two Advisory Committees, the BSP team shall comprise of a team of highly skilled personnel including Bioinformaticians, Biostatisticians and Systems Engineers. These staff members will be distributed between Meraka and other selected institutions in South Africa reporting to the Manager of BSP. The Manager of the BSP will be responsible for leading and managing all BSP activities supported by these distributed staff members. The incumbent must ensure the continual growth of the BSP, warrant the effective service delivery of this noteworthy national initiative and make a significant impact on the academic and industry sectors.

Key responsibilities:

  • Ensure the BSP steering committee and advisory committees are well functioned.
  • Lead a team of bioinformatics support staff funded by the BSP that are embedded within a central organization and different academic or industrial settings.
  • Establish formal working relations and foster joint activities with key stakeholders.
  • Grow the portfolio of the BSP, attract additional grants, and participate in development of research and funding proposals with both academic and industrial stakeholders.
  • Together with the Steering Committee, define and implement operational best practices, stakeholder engagement as well as the monitoring and evaluation framework to track the impact of the BSP.
  • Integrate information on bioinformatics expertise within the BSP and disseminate relevant information about new tools and resources to the community.
  • Ensure South African life scientists and biomedical researchers have access to mirrored databases and tools central to bioinformatics research.
  • Under the guidance of the Steering committee, implement effective bioinformatics training programmes for researchers in the biotech industry and academia.
  • Conduct annual stakeholders’ feedback sessions and report on the level of services to the BSP steering committee.. Deliver an annual report and roadmap to the general public.
  • Develop effective collaboration on bioinformatics related activities amongst biological research communities within South Africa and Africa.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • MSc degree in Bioinformatics or related discipline, a PhD degree will be an added advantage
  • At least 5 years working experience in a bioinformatics services environment. Candidate must demonstrate a proven track record of leading a team of highly skilled staff members.
  • Strong background in computational sciences with extensive experience in the use of and/or tool development of high performance computing, data analytics, statistics, data management, and the like.
  • Exhibit the potential to or have previously been involved in formulating and/or implementing high level bioinformatics services related strategy or activities.
  • Skilled in working with bioinformatics tools and applications. Broad knowledge of the bioinformatics field with an extensive network of local and international stakeholders.
  • Publication records, student supervisory experience and prior experience of working with industry will be an added advantage.
