Research officer (project coordinator/ analyst) - Human Genetics University of Cape Town

An exciting job opportunity has become available working on cutting edge human genomics research in
collaboration with geneticists and psychiatrists at Columbia University, Washington University, and Rutgers
University in the United States on a 12-month contract.

MSc degree in Human Molecular Genetics (with population and statistical genetics) or a related field.

Minimum requirements:

Exposure to at least one of the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) platforms (eg. Ion, Illumina, 454 etc.) is essential, and this would include analyses on datasets arising from any of the following: SNP CHIP technology, Whole Exome Sequencing, Directed Panels and/or Whole Genome Sequencing, in a Unix-based environment.

The candidate should have experience with high throughput technologies and data analysis, and bioinformatics tools applied to analyse high throughput genomic data. The researcher will have teaching and communication skills enabling him/her to transfer these bioinformatics capabilities within the immediate research environment in
order to build and expand the capacity to perform analysis.

Previous exposure to applications such as FastQC, BWA, Samtools, PicardTools and GATK would be an advantage.

S/he will be responsible for managing all Bioinformatics-relevant aspects of both the study and the Division of Human Genetics. S/he will be expected to train other staff and students in bioinformatics. An important aspect of the position is to devise workflows and pipelines for the analysis of NGS Data. S/he will, additionally oversee that all relevant information for biological samples is collected, that biological materials are correctly received and processed in the laboratory, and shipped where this is necessary. S/he will
also take on a supportive role for research and or teaching at the discretion of the Head of the Division of Human Genetics (Professor Raj Ramesar).
The annual cost of employment, is between R 253 552 and R 484 656
