The Faculty of Science is launching a new and innovative branch of biological science at Macquarie University – Synthetic Biology. Synthetic biology combines engineering principles with molecular biological approaches to design and construct biological devices and systems. Recent highlights in this field include the design and synthesis of a functional bacterial genome and a yeast chromosome, and generation of synthetic bacterial cells. The rational synthesis of "designer" organisms yield important insights into how organisms work and has the potential to revolutionise biotechnological applications in areas such as bioenergy and biomanufacturing.

The Positions

Level B/C (Lecturer/Senior Lecturer) in Synthetic Biology

Two full-time, continuing positions are available.

The successful candidates will:

  • Have a PhD in a relevant discipline
  • Develop and lead a research program in one or more of the following areas:
  • Synthetic biology
  • Molecular genetics
  • Comparative and/or functional genomics
  • Genetic programming
  • DNA synthesis and assembly
  • Genome design
  • Epigenomics
  • Metabolic pathway engineering
  • Develop internal and external collaborations
  • Apply for and attract external funds
  •  Strive for teaching excellence at the undergraduate and postgraduate level (postgraduate course-work or supervision)
  • Contribute to the full range of departmental activities

Level B/C (Lecturer/Senior Lecturer) in Bioinformatics

One continuing full-time position is available.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a PhD in a relevant discipline (biology, physics, mathematics, statistics, chemistry or computer sciences)
  • Develop and lead a research program in bioinformatics and genomic data analysis
  • Demonstrated experience in database development
  • Demonstrated interest in synthetic biology
  • Develop internal and external collaborations
  • Demonstrated ability to program in one or more relevant computer languages (such as Perl, Python, R, C++)
  • Apply for and attract external funds
  • Strive for teaching excellence at the undergraduate and postgraduate level (postgraduate course-work or supervision)
  • Contribute to the full range of departmental activities

Level B (Research Fellow) in Synthetic Biology

One full-time, fixed-term position to 31 December 2017.

The successful candidates will:

  • Play a central role in Macquarie's participation in the global Yeast 2.0 synthetic biology consortium project (synthesis of chromosome 14 & 16 of Saccharomyces cerevisiae)
  • Work with two Post-Doctoral positions involved in the Yeast 2.0 project
  • Co-supervise higher degree research (HDR) students
  • Write papers and assist with community outreach activities
  • Seek opportunities to attract additional research grants to grow the synthetic biology enterprise at Macquarie University

    Additional selection criteria for appointment at Level C (Senior Lecturer) relative to opportunity:

  • Proven record of research excellence in one or more of the fields listed above
  • Proven record in attracting external funds
  • Proven record in developing and delivering teaching excellence

 Research Fellow (Level B) Essential Selection Criteria relative to opportunity:

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. Synthetic Biology or Molecular Genetics)
  • Demonstrated experience with molecular biology techniques. Experience in bioinformatics will be highly regarded
  • Demonstrated skills in trouble shooting and optimising molecular techniques. In particular PCR, qPCR, RFLP, pulsed field electrophoresis, cloning and the manipulation of large DNA fragments.
  • Experience with molecular manipulation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
  • Experience in writing applications for external grant funding and fellowships
  • Track record in building collaborations within and outside a university environment

Salary Package:

Level B (Lecturer): Base Salary from $88,741 to $104,996 per annum  plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading.

Level B (Research Fellow): Base Salary from $88,741 to $104,996 per annum  plus 9.5% superannuation and annual leave loading.

Level C (Senior Lecturer): Base Salary from $108,354 - $124,607 per annum plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading.
