Manager:Bioinformatics Service Platform

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has invested in a National Bioinformatics Service Platform (BSP) with the aim of providing a range of user-centered and well-coordinated computational bioinformatics services to the South African biotechnology industry and life science researchers. The BSP will be managed within the Centre for High Performance Computing of the Meraka Institute of CSIR.

The Manager of the BSP will lead and manage all BSP activities, ensuring that the continual growth of the BSP warrants the effective service delivery of this noteworthy national initiative and making a significant impact on the academic and industry sectors.

The role demands a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics or related discipline (a doctoral degree will be an advantage), at least 5 years’ working experience in a bioinformatics services environment and a proven track record of leading a team of highly skilled staff. A strong background in computational sciences, with extensive experience in the use of and/or tool development of high performance computing, data analytics, statistics, data management, etc, is also needed. The ideal candidate will exhibit the potential to or have previously been involved in formulating and/or implementing high-level bioinformatics services-related strategy or activities. He/she will be skilled in working with bioinformatics tools and applications and boast broad knowledge of the bioinformatics field (with an extensive network of local and international stakeholders). A publication record, student supervisory experience and prior experience of working with industry will be added advantages.
