A Marie Curie position for a Post-Doctorate Researcher at Málaga, Spain

A position is available for a post-doctorate researcher for a period of 2 years in the context of a
Marie Curie Industry Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) project. The University of
Málaga coordinates the Mr.SymBioMath project and is looking for an post-doc researcher with
experience in high performance computing and strong interest / experience in bioinformatics in
the field of comparative genomics.


The position is for an experienced researcher with less than 10 years of research experience as it
is defined in the Marie-Curie IAPP requirements:
Definition: Experienced Researchers must, at the time of recruitment or secondment,

(i) be in possession of a doctoral degree, independently of the time taken to acquire it or
(ii) have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience, including the
period of research training, after obtaining the degree which formally allowed them to
embark on a doctorate in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country
of the host institution to which they are seconded or recruited (irrespective of whether a
doctorate was envisaged or not).

The researcher should also fulfill the required mobility requirements:
Mobility: at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have
resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host
organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference
date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into
account. As far as international European interest organisations or international
organisations are concerned, this rule does not apply to the hosting of eligible
researchers. However, the appointed researcher must not have spent more than 12
months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment at the host organization.
The position will be based at the University of Málaga (http://www.uma.es/) in the BITLAB group
(http://www.bitlab-es.com) for 2 years and will start earliest the 1st of February 2014.

Description of Mr.SymBioMath
The project High Performance, Cloud and Symbolic Computing in Big-Data Problems applied to
Mathematical Modeling of Comparative Genomics (Mr.SymBioMath) running from February 2013
to January 2017 is being funded by the European Union within the 7th framework programme
for research as an Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) project under grant
agreement number 324554.
Mr. SymBioMath links different research domains coming up with a coordinated multi-disciplinary
approach for the development of tools targeting Big-Data and computationally intensive scientific
applications. Generic solutions for Big-Data storage, management, distribution, processing and
final analysis will be developed. While these solutions target a broad range of scientific
applications, as a concrete proof-of-concept they will be implemented in the Comparative
Genomics field of bioinformatics and biomedical domains.
All of these applications are well suited to apply high-performance and cloud computing
approaches and present a high potential for commercialization. Visualization techniques for
different output devices ranging from Virtual Reality environments to mobile devices will be
developed to enhance the human understanding of the result data sets.

Researcher Profile
The candidate should have a background in computer science and high performance computing
(HPC) with a good understanding of and strong interest in bioinformatics, ideally with some
experience in comparative genomics. Experience in HPC and cloud computing techniques, webservices
and/or C/Java programming will be valued positively. Since the candidate will be part of
the project team, he/she should have good communication skills in English, ability to work both
independently and as part of a team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
The candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team with experts in both bioinformatics and
computer science. The main task of the researcher will be to develop HPC procedures for bigdata
processing in the cloud, using as a proof of concept the field of metagenome analysis.
These procedures will be included in a software suite for high performance data processing in
comparative genomics.
The candidate is also expected to prepare reports and presentations for interaction with
colleagues and partners and discuss and fine-tune results. He/her is also skilled at planning
his/her work several months in advance to meet deadlines for meetings, reports and journal
publications. Additionally, the candidate should attend courses and project meetings as directed
by the scientist in charge (Dr. Trelles).

The researcher will receive the standard EC Marie Curie IAPP Living Allowance for the category
(approximately 3.500Euros / monthgross salary and, in addition, a mobility allowance of around
700 Euros per month (higher mobility allowance for researchers with family).
