Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR)  - Advert for position of Bioinformatician

Background

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) is a semi-autonomous institute of the University of Ghana and a leading biomedical  research facility in Ghana. NMIMR conducts research into communicable and non-communicable diseases, provides training opportunities in biomedical research for undergraduates and postgraduate students and high end laboratory diagnostic and monitoring services in support of public health programmes.

In seeking to expand its frontiers and excellence in cutting edge science, NMIMR is strengthening expertise and research in Bioinformatics through the H3ABioNet Consortium. H3ABioNet is led by the CBIO Group at University of Cape Town, South Africa, with over thirty institutions mostly within Africa to develop a Pan African Bioinformatics Network for the Human Heredity and Health (H3Africa) Initiative (http://www.h3africa.org/). The network will build capacity in bioinformatics in Africa and develop a bioinformatics support platform for NIH funded H3Africa research projects.

The NMIMR Node/Centre wishes to employ a Bioinformatician to work with a team of researchers participating in the H3ABioNet program. Job  responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Being part of the H3ABioNet helpdesk task force to assist with Bioinformatics queries from H3A consortia.
  • Providing bioinformatics support for large scale genomics/omics projects.
  • Assisting life scientists with experimental data analysis.
  • Training life scientists, in basic and advanced bioinformatics
  • Taking part in various research projects carried out at the NMIMR node
  • Preparing training materials for training programs.
  • Assisting the node manager with network management duties.
  • Assisiting in creating grant applications to national and international funding organisations.

Requirements

  • PhD or MSc qualification in Bioinformatics, Computer Science or Health Informatics.
  • A strong background in bioinformatics.
  • Familiarity with concepts in Next Generation Sequencing, Genotyping, Genome Wide
  • Association Analysis, SNP/Variant analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Python, SAS, MATLAB, and R.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Training skills are an advantage.
